11 year-old Wesley Wright, a sixth grader at Hinson Middle School, experienced hardships in his math
course. After reviewing the curriculum map, Ida Wright discovered a disconnect with what was taught in
fifth grade, and what was expected to be learned prior to entering sixth grade. More specifically, what was
expected of sixth grade math students was not properly introduced in fifth grade – placing unreasonable expectations on sixth grade students due to a lack of curriculum correlation.
An engaged parent in Wesley's education, during a parent/teacher conference Ida wondered how parents could become more active and essentially stronger advocates for education. Ida decided to be more
proactive, she began exploring various policies and decisions made by the Volusia County School Board.
Together, curriculum issues and feeling disadvantaged as a parent inspired Ida to announce her candidacy as the District 2 Representative on the Volusia County School Board. As a lifetime resident of the Daytona Beach Community, and a parent of a student within the system, Ida is fully invested in making a positive difference.
The current economic climate requires the Volusia County School Board to do more with less funding; Ida is the “Wright” choice as the District 2 Representative. With a master’s degree in business administration from Stetson University, Ida’s educational experience is fitting for service. Ida is a small business owner, and for the last nine years has served as a business instructor within Bethune-Cookman University’s School of Business Administration, Ida’s professional experience is fitting for service.
